Preview: Announcing The Worldwide Classic Boat Show

There is an opportunity, alongside the many challenges we’re all facing, to come together and strengthen the classic and wooden boating field in ways that we never have.

There’s also an opportunity for classic boat lovers to become more aware of, and feel more connected to, the many wonderful things happening all around the globe.

So, today we’re excited to announce something we’ve been working on for quite awhile — The Worldwide Classic Boat Show to be held February 19-28 online at ClassicBoatShow.com . . .

We’ve just opened the ticket booth, so you can CLICK HERE to get your ticket to the Show.

The lifeblood of this field is provided by festivals, shows, schools, museums, boatbuilders and many other artisans and organizations.  The truth is, we haven’t all been as connected and aware of each other’s work as we could be. Then the pandemic arrived and has been creating more distance between us all. With shows, festivals and school programs cancelled, ethusiasts and the next generation of craftspeople are beginning to feel this distance as well.

Hello, Classic Boat Show crew. Sorry for being so late, but I just saw the “Leaders in the Field” paragraph listing photographers. I clicked on the link, but I guess it has been taken down as you guys are so flooded with responses. Anyway, I’m a photographer from Washington State and have lots of photos from the Port Townsend Wooden Boat show if you would like to include any of them in your show. Can’t wait for your show to open!

Very kind offer Mark. We’re all set for now as photographers are going to be showing their own work.

Hi David. Looks like you were successful and purchased a ticket 3 minutes ago, so thank you and sorry for the challenge!

Are you going to put the “Register to attend the Worldwide Boatshow” on your home page? I can easily log in to your web site as a member, as I have just done, but for whatever reason when trying to log into your separate page to register to attend the boatshow I’m told my password doesn’t work. I’ve tried it umpteen times and different was with no success. My boat is registered, but me, well……. what to do?

    • Steve Stone

      Steve Stone says:

Hi Rich. The Boat Show website is different from Off Center Harbor so you’ll need to create an account over there as you purchase your ticket. You can try to use the same username and password over there as you do here on OCH so you have one/same login for both sites.

If it strongarms you to use a stronger password, try to ignore it and see if it’ll take. If not, you can go back later and change it to be the same as your OCH password.

Uhhhh . . . how about now? :) It’s technically the 15th but we’re getting hundreds so it’ll help us (and you) to get it in early.

You’re a funny guy, I totally understand. You all are freakin’ heroes for doing this, what an undertaking! You’re giving some boat owners an opportunity to be a part of a boat show not normally accessible to most of us. You realize you may have unleashed a monster?!
I will submit my entry ASAP! THANK YOU

Quick question, when the boat show starts are you going to require emails from non-OCH members who attend? I’m hoping the answer is “no”…but I appreciate that you don’t sell/use email addresses. The show website currently asks for emails to get more info. Thanks…looking forward to the show!

      Steve Stone says:

Hi Daniel ~ Good question. The short answer is yes. The type websites/systems we work with all require email addresses and it’s the only way you’ll be able to find out what’s happening at the show.

As you say, we always keep our email list very private and NEVER sell or share them. And there’s always a link to opt out of our lists.

Just wanted to know if you wanted my 1964 16′ Nova Scotia built ‘Falcon Class’ (early FG), cuddy Sloop by McVay, to enter, as I sold it last year. Turned 81, so my last boast. She won First Place in class at the Apalachicola FL Boat Show. Have Pics.

One of the classics is not just a boat but also a legend. John Guzzwell is a classic . He and Treka would make a great addition to the online festival. His current and personal boat, Treasure, is a great classic as well. A Giles design, John built over 50 years ago, now is moored behind his home in Liberty Bay (WA State). John is pushing 90 so a visit from Nate or one of your team would make for very special content.

I can’t wait to see the world in the venue!!! Offcenter Harbor is already an amazing virtual platform that covers some amazing places, people and boats.

If this is going to be a cost Boat Show similar to the Port Townsend Virtual Wooden Boat Festival, it would be great if you paid for the show that the contents would be available on the Offcenter Harbor site for future viewing.

I have photo progressions for my past builds of a Pygmy Kayak, Chesapeake Light Craft Paddle Board, and Joel White sailing Nutshell Pram. Also, I am just starting my build on a Glen-L designed Bo-Jest. I am definitely willing to share if there is an amateur boatbuilders section or forum.

    Hi Steve,
I am the president of the New England Lyman Group and we emailed a bit last spring when I sent you a link to our Covid induced/inspired virtual boat show.

As you know, these boats are true classics and many survive in New England today because of the passion and love their owners have for these great boats.

From everyday users to national show winners, our group includes some of the best examples in the country.

I’d like to reach out to our membership (100 plus) and alert them of this opportunity to submit their boats to the World Wide Classic Boat Show. What do you suggest is the best way to do this and benefit both the NELG and the OCH Crew?
    Thanks,
    Doug Bell

Members of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club are planning to add a Classic Yachts division to their annual regatta July 24-25 in 2021, the weekend before the Camden Classics Cup and two weeks before the similar series leading up to the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta.

Living in Colorado, boating consists of using reservoirs. As such, one is confined to small boats that are usually made of plywood, (Shellback Dinghy is mine), and not plank-on-frame. Since the title has “Classic” in it, will things like canoes, kayaks and small craft made of composites be excluded?

    • Steve Stone

      Steve Stone says:

Absolutely not Andy. We’re open to various materials and not getting hung up on traditional/purist definitions of “classic”. We’ll keep our “off center” approach and humor to the criteria of what makes up “classic” boat. Thanks for asking that important question.

    Dave Bruce says:

Wonderful idea as always in your wide-ranging balanced coverage. Boat design!
I’m 2 years into the thick of it … and many days I STUDY, calculate, draw, and make real progress. My ‘used’ library of relevant books has matured at about 17. People could offer accounts of their learning and efforts. DESIGN DISCUSSION …. seaworthy, motion comfort, speed, handling … is becoming a lost art? A design section would be fascinating and informative reading for the general boating public. I did boat work and commercial fishing in Prince William Sound for 10 years … am designing 32’5″ 25’1″ 8’2′ 5’2″ sailing yawl cruiser/worker for there. The williwaws blowing out of Valdez, whoah! They can stack up the seas 10-15 foot, tight. Design language makes sense of the wide range of boating purposes and environments. I came by and met you and Maynard, lunch… talked of Herreshoff’s Aida and Pleasure. :-)

      Steve Stone says:

Thanks Dave. Good suggestion, design discussion. Got it.

    What’s OCH’s definition of a “classic boat”?

Does our 1986 Bridges Point 24 (fiberglass) sailboat qualify? Ray Of Hope certainly looks classic as she lies on her Center Harbor mooring amidst other BBY creations and beautiful boats in Brooklin… and, we are “classic sailors”….

    • Steve Stone

      Steve Stone says:

For sure, Stephen. Good question. Fiberglass classic are not excluded, and this is why we went with “classic” rather than “wooden”. And of course classic fiberglass doesn’t get any better than the Bridges Point 24.

  • David Tew

    David Tew says:

Hi Guys- I’m confused about what the sentence below means as far as a show is concerned. Is the show for builders, brokers and for owners selling their boats? Or can participants show photos of their own boats for others to view? In other words, what criteria determines ‘consideration’? (Maybe you haven’t gotten that far yet.)

    Thanks!

“Submitting a Boat for the Show:
You can CLICK HERE to receive instructions on how to submit your boat for consideration in the show.”

    • Steve Stone

      Steve Stone says:

Thanks for the question Dave. Yes, submitting boats will be open to everyone. We’ll be putting together that process soon and will announce it when it’s ready.

    Stuart Weibel says:

It would be helpful to understand the business model of the event.

Is your expectation that participants will create content that you will sell to others?

    • Steve Stone

      Steve Stone says:

We’ll be developing all that over the next few months, Stuart, but your premise is not the mindset of where we’re headed.

I am overjoyed to see this seed of Worldwide Classic Boat Show! Even though I am mostly a passenger I am interested. Worldwide is where we need to be headed. Connecting through all the incredible stories, amazingly skilled boat builders, the historical aspects including the societies around the globe, as well as what brings us closer. Thank you for the seed! It makes me a little happier today than when I woke up.

I like this idea. I hope you will invite/include classic wooden boats from the Great Lakes also. I have seen some beauties on Lake Superior, and have heard of many great woodenboats on Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes. The Great Lakes Boatbuilding School may be able to help identify some of those ‘laker’ classic boats. Thanks for all your work for OCH.

    Great idea!

There are a couple of boats I would like to see in detail. Kennedy’s Manitou yawl. Bogart’s Santanna, Brooklin Boat Yard built, spirit of tradition, Anna. All boats that I have admired from afar. Thanx.

Thanks for your suggestion Lyle. Good ones for sure.
