Boomerang - a Laurent Giles - designed Brittany class sloop

The design dates from the late 30s, and 20 were built, mainly in the late 30s, 40s and 50s. The Brittany is a smaller version of the Channel class, (designed in the mid 30s), and reckoned by some to be a better boat. 33ft loa, 25′ waterline, 8’5″ beam, 5’6″ draught, displ 6.4 tons.

    Very nicely written Gubby!
Must be quite lonely single handed in those conditions.
    Cheers,
    Tim.

A great story! I went to the Azores myself last year, from Portugal, and you brought back fond memories. We’re going again this year, via Madeira, hoping to visit Horta and Graciosa, which we didn’t get to last time.
    Happy sailing

I have always admired your boat,s design. I however bought a 40 ft. Winthrup L. Warner Cutter built in 1947 and enjoy it very much for the same reasons you expressed.

Hi Gubby, It’s been a long time. Thanks for the story. It is a good one. I know the feeling of a storm alone with a drought but my old trimaran Heather K had a self bailing cockpit and I doubt that I would go without that feature. We sold our canalboat on the Midi so I have been hankering for a trip to the UK maybe even to the Emerald. Cheers Damian

Thanks for a great story. I do think you should consider installing cockpit drains, however! My boat, a 29 foot Sam Crocker design, is also named Boomerang in hopes she will always return to her mooring.

    Regards,
