Description from Boat's Main Listing
BLACKWITCH is a 1949 gaff-rigged sloop built by Wilmington Boatworks to a Ralph Winslow design based on Friendship sloops. These boats were originally built in or near Friendship, Maine, for lobstering in the days of sail. They were remarkable workboats, well suited for fishing the Maine coastal waters in all kinds of weather. The type was later modified by Winslow for recreational use.
BLACKWITCH is a wonderful classic that has been restored / rebuilt from stem to stern at the Spaulding Boat Center in Sausalito, CA, to high standards. All the planking below the waterline is new as well as the decks and deck beams. This rebuild is fairly recent (2008) and the boat has been meticulously maintained since. She was hauled out in 2021 for extensive repairs including planking, replacing the floor and stem bolts, and painting the bottom and topsides. A new propeller and zincs were installed. Her Yanmar engine has been serviced regularly. A new spruce mast built by Bruce Tipton at the Spaulding Boat Center, has been stepped and rigged (2015). She is built with traditional carvel planking of Port Oxford cedar over hardwood frames; original frames 1¾” x 1½” mostly all sistered with white oak 1½” x 1½”. Fir sheer clamps, fir deck beams, floor timbers and keelson; oak horn timber, and mahogany rudder.
Awarded the Stone Cup Trophy for best in show /restored vessel best boat, Professional Restoration at the 2016 Master Mariner Wooden Boat Show. Love it.
*Note that she has recently been converted back to tiller steering but all wheel parts were saved and can be easily retrofitted.
She is as smooth and fast as she is elegant; a lovely winning gaffer in the Master Mariners Classic Regattas; and beautifully maintained with a brand new spar and more recent upgrades.
