Follow along with Peter Slack’s ongoing series about the restoration of COASTAL QUEEN, a Chesapeake Bay Buy Boat built in 1928 and modified in the late 1950s to a cruising yacht. The series follows the process from the bottom up, as a new keel, keelson and cross planking are needed to support this massive structure.
December 10, 2023 – COASTAL QUEEN Restoration Project – Episode 24: REV
Busy work inside and out of the Coastal Queen. Finishers are “safeguarding” previous work to keep out of harms way from the carpenters, and shipwrights. The interior build starts to take shape after necessary structure is finished and the hold on the foredeck awaits the last large item before it’s sealed…the gyro. The “Finishers” continue to work their magic in less than ideal conditions ensuring they keep on schedule with brightwork and final paint. Soon after the shipwrights shape and finish the wood, a fresh coat of paint and multiple coats of varnish follows.
