As the seasons turn and boats in the northern latitudes are hauled out, here’s a look at a boat and a skipper who’s not afraid of some serious heavy weather sailing.

For over 25 years, Skip Novak has been sailing his ‘Pelagic’ yachts to high latitude destinations like Antarctica, Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn.

In this Yachting World video series, Skip shares a range of heavy weather sailing techniques. Although you may not have plans to sail in conditions this extreme, I think you’ll find that many of these principles can apply to your own experience and will help you be better-prepared when heavy weather does blow in.

We’re going to start with some introductory videos, and we’ll be sharing the remainder of the 12-part series over the coming days and weeks.

What’s also remarkable about Skip and his Pelagics is that he charters the boats for climbing and mountaineering expeditions in places like South Georgia. These are tough boats owned by one tough guy!
