There is an active ice boating scene on the Hudson River at this time of year when the ice conditions allow. I would like to photograph some of the great old gaff rigged boats that are still in active use, and while researching the subject, I found this video of a previous gathering when conditions were perfect. Get yourself a nice hot cup of tea, sit back and enjoy the spectacle.

I got my first chance to sail on the ice a couple weeks ago. Great fun and look forward to my next time. Nice to see the old classics and the music was great.

“Hard water sailing” has got it all, IMO. This video proves you can have the elegance and style of beautiful vintage boats and the adrenalin of speed as well, maybe not the speed of the most modern racers with their ultralight weight and high tech rigs, but enough speed to get the pulse rate of all but the most hardened junkies up. I look forward to seeing some of Ben’s work on iceboats, stills or videos, sometime in the future. Maybe a hardwater sailing calendar? Or at least a few iceboats in the winter months of the Calendar of Wooden Boats? Thanks for sharing this Ben.

I love this one. I saw it last year on Youtube and have dreamed about one of these sternsteering ice yachts since. Thanks for reminding me how much I enjoyed it. That band completely enhances the experience!
