Here’s a great series documenting the repair of a leaky Herreshoff 12.5 (or 12-1/2-footer, as some put it). Created by Fish Hawk Films, these Tips from a Shipwright videos show how Louis Sauzedde takes on the repair of the Herreshoff 12.5 RHODE ISLAND RED where the apron-style keel timber meets the stem.

It’s informative to watch Louis evaluate the project, then prescribe and execute a fix. We like how the series takes a realistic turn when Louis decides to laminate the new forefoot after his attempt to steam bend a solid timber didn’t work out.

While we’re not recommending that you follow some of what you’ll see here (using a skill saw blade on a grinder with a homemade blade guard or doing an epoxy lamination without gloves, for example) you’ll pick up lots of tips and tricks as you watch how this ingenious shipwright goes about his work and explains it so well.
