Watch Leo Goolden as he brings back the 47’ teak-planked TALLY HO to the glorious gaff cutter she was when launched over a hundred years ago in England. This vessel, designed by Albert Strange, now lies in a shed in Boat Haven in Port Townsend, WA.
The backstories, and there are many, can be found on Leo’s website, his Facebook postings, and on the Albert Strange Association’s TALLY HO pages.
In addition, Leo wrote a piece on TALLY HO for SOUNDINGS Magazine – “Tally Ho, Adventure! The Quest to Put a 1927 Fastnet Winner Back on the High Seas”.
April 19th, 2025 – TALLY HO – Episode 216: TALLY HO & the Stories That Built Her — A Live Talk in Helsinki
In this episode Leo is invited to give a talk at the Classic Yacht Symposium in Helsinki, Finland.
First he talks about the TALLY HO story – how he started the project and how they rebuilt the boat, including some details that have never been shared before.
In the second part of the talk, Leo discusses the stories that inspired him to start boatbuilding and sailing in the first place, and the importance of risk and adventure in storytelling and life in general.
John Wujack says:
I’m surprised that this latest installment has gone without comment after about a week given the enthusiasm and numbers following the Tally Ho restoration. Perhaps earlier posting on YouTube has muted the response here on OCH. In an attempt to kickoff discussion here, I’ll share an earlier comment of mine answering the question, “what factors contributed to Tally Ho’s popularity?” I believe that the timing of the Project, being bookended by the early and ending days of the covid pandemic captivated and offered escape from the grim realities of the pandemic to an audience that was shut in eager for some form of relief. Leo and the crew’s talent(s) were a perfect antidote. I know that I was and shared that thought and thanks with Leo at the 2025 Port Towsend Wooden Boat Festival.
