Watch Leo Goolden as he brings back the 47’ teak-planked TALLY HO to the glorious gaff cutter she was when launched over a hundred years ago in England. This vessel, designed by Albert Strange, lies under a shed in Sequim, WA, that Leo built next to the shop/apartment he rejuvenated—helped out occasionally by Poncho the parrot and Brian the dog.
The backstories, and there are many, can be found on Leo’s website, his Facebook postings, and on the Albert Strange Association’s TALLY HO pages.
In addition, Leo wrote a piece on TALLY HO for SOUNDINGS Magazine – “Tally Ho, Adventure! The Quest to Put a 1927 Fastnet Winner Back on the High Seas”.
September 29, 2018 – Episode 32: The largest new wooden boat in the country! – Replica Pilot Cutter PELLEW Update
Leo returns to the UK for an update on PELLEW, a replica of the 1852 Falmouth Pilot Cutter VINCENT and set to be “the largest new wooden boat in the country!” Leo and Chief Shipwright Luke Powell discuss the repercussions of size in this project – the incredible timber for the mast and spars, the massive scantlings in the hull, and keeping a project of this scale moving forward efficiently.
Once PELLEW is complete, both her use and repair will help sustain the yard for years to come. The entire project is geared towards bringing a new generation into traditional boats and boatbuilding – our kind of cause!

Andy Reynolds says:
This whole series is inspirational as well as entertaining, but these two “sidebars” back to the UK and Luke Powell’s enterprise are the best, IMO. They show the mentor and role model that are behind Leo’s amazingly ambitious and audacious project to restore Tally Ho. The depth and commitment of the traditional wooden boat culture of the UK are a beautiful thing to be able to share, even if only through videos, and the inclusion of this in OCH content is much appreciated…thanks, Nate R. and OCH!
