TALLY HO – Episode 58: Ship of Theseus / Project Recap!

Watch Leo Goolden as he brings back the 47’ teak-planked TALLY HO to the glorious gaff cutter she was when launched over a hundred years ago in England. This vessel, designed by Albert Strange, lies under a shed in Sequim, WA, that Leo built next to the shop/apartment he rejuvenated—helped out occasionally by Poncho the parrot and Brian the dog.

The backstories, and there are many, can be found on Leo’s website, his Facebook postings, and on the Albert Strange Association’s TALLY HO pages.

In addition, Leo wrote a piece on TALLY HO for SOUNDINGS Magazine – “Tally Ho, Adventure! The Quest to Put a 1927 Fastnet Winner Back on the High Seas”.

October 19, 2019 – Episode 58: Ship of Theseus / Project Recap!
Leo takes a break from work to wax philosophical on what it means to rebuild a boat, and how this question has been posed over many millenia. Adding to his jack-of-all-trades resume, Leo proves that he is not just an amazing worker and project manager – he is also a thoughtful philosopher, able to pull in examples through the ages and combine them with his personal experiences and point of view. It may be, in his words “staring at [his] ugly mug for so long,” but it’s a valuable episode to gain more context on the work he’s done and, more importantly, why.

  • John McCarthy says:

I have asked my self the questions Leo asks. “is this Tallyho or a new boat”? At what stage
do replacing parts make a completely new whole. If I have a major organ replaced, say my heart, am I still me? If my car has a complete engine rebuild, is it the same car? I think Leo has answered these questions to my satisfaction. I had no idea that in addition to his many skills, that he is quite a philosopher. Anyhow, in the end I suppose I don’t really care. This is a brilliant and fascinating video series, featuring many brilliant and fascinating people. And they are rebuilding an old boat as well. Long live Tallyho.
