Watch Leo Goolden as he brings back the 47’ teak-planked TALLY HO to the glorious gaff cutter she was when launched over a hundred years ago in England. This vessel, designed by Albert Strange, lies under a shed in Sequim, WA, that Leo built next to the shop/apartment he rejuvenated—helped out occasionally by Poncho the parrot and Brian the dog.
The backstories, and there are many, can be found on Leo’s website, his Facebook postings, and on the Albert Strange Association’s TALLY HO pages.
In addition, Leo wrote a piece on TALLY HO for SOUNDINGS Magazine – “Tally Ho, Adventure! The Quest to Put a 1927 Fastnet Winner Back on the High Seas”.
March 27, 2021 – Episode 94: Finished planking! / Final “Whisky Plank”
Very big news over in Sequim these days, as Leo’s crack planking crew has made incredible progress. They can hardly hold back their pride as the shutter planks get whacked into place. Leo takes the top four (two on each side) while Pete takes the lower four. It’s especially striking to see the sun casting shadows through the open hull, then less, then none as the last planks take their final position. Just as satisfying is Leo’s trimming of the planks at the transom and being able to see the boat abeam now that the secondary shed is gone – what a hull form!
Russ McComb says:
I’ve been following you since the very beginning. Congratulations to you Leo and all your crew. A tremendous job you’ve done. And Well Done too!
I’ve recently completed building a 20′ wherry. My hat’s off to you all.
John Wujack says:
I’m trading in my Dark and Stormy for a Whiskey (tonight only!) Congrats to the entire crew. Tally Ho looks beautiful.
