The mast is now complete, sans coating with epoxy and then painting it. I decided there is just too much “patina and character” to allow nice looking coats of varnish get overshadowed with my marginal work. It’s the right length, it should fit into the boat mast partner and step. It ultimately came out OK. It started out weighing 22.2 pounds as a rough square blank. After my efforts, it now comes in at a decent 12.6 pounds. I removed 9.6 lbs. of wood. It feels heavy, but it will do.

It doesn’t nest into the boat. I will need to sort that out. Can’t have it flopping and sliding around when out for a row. On to epoxy, then paint, then finish up so of this and some of that and I should be done.

Spent the entire day planing and sanding the mast. Power plane, two hand planes, my PVC sanding tube, a long board sanding block and a steady Rythmn of back and forth. Worked well  very cathartic.

all done, not a museum piece, but it should hold the sail and rigging.
