I have dry fitted the pintles and gudgeons. The rudder needed a little cutting/chiseling to get a nice tight fit.  The lower pintle needed to be trimmed back which I did on the bandsaw, followed with some filing work. Everything looks good, the rudder is aligned vertically on the stern center line. After exterior hull is painted, will re-attach hardware and bed with either 4200 or 5200.

You can see I am not a very good finish / trim carpenter. Jim Ledger is building / chronicalling a boat build on Wooden Boat Forun, he fits his joints with feeler gauges . His workmanship is beyond my imagination –  just stunning work. I realize I will never be that good. It just is not in my gene pool.

HOWEVER, I LOOK AT IT THIS WAY. I DO MAKE MISTAKES, SOME OF MY WORK IS A BIT SLOPPY (ON THE RARE OCCASION); I HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO FILL GAPS IN JOINTS WITH THICKENED EPOXY. I DO BELIEVE IN THE LAW OF DIMINISHING RETURNS.

WHAT I DO IS BUILD IN CHARACTER AND PATINA IN TO ALL MY BOATS. EACH ONE STARTS WITH SOMETHING UNIQUE, DISTINCTIVE, OR SUBTLE. EQCH ONE IS A ONE-OFF CREATION.   ANYONE’S HAND BUILT BOAT, CANOE, KAYAK, ETC. – NO MATTER HOW GOOD OR BAD – IS BETTER THAN ANY FACTORY BUILT BOAT.  HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED ANY CHARACTER OR PATINA  WHILE,LOOKING AT A SEA RAY IN A DEALER SHOWROOM.

Hi Doug, very nice job, I am building the same boat and am wondering where you found the pintles and gudgeons for her. I have looked everywhere and can’t find them in bronze or brass, would really appreciate a shot out to where they are. thanks Jeff Chabot

Jeff – Try Hamilton Marine in Maine. Or Jamestown Distributors.

I will try to go through my receipts, something tells me it wasn’t Hamilton…..I’ll look.
