Once again I am lost for words on how much I enjoyed these videos and the comments. Thank you gentlemen.

I grew up on Puget Sound and spent a lot of time on it power boating and fishing growing up, it I’ve never had a boat of my own.
So now, in my 60’s I recently began shopping , and given my budget and intended use ( day sailing a bit of camp cruising sleeping ashore thought I would be I’d up with a something like a small well used San Juan 21.
But then I found a Columbia Tender for sale and in need of minor repair and refinishing.
I take delivery of her this week and after a soak so she can take up, intend to learn to sail in her.
I really enjoyed this video, and learned a good bit about this beautiful tender.
Thank you!

Maynard,
You mentioned that one of the dinghies at the HMM was the lifeboat for the M-boat “Prestige.” I worked on the “Prestige” in 1963-4. She had fallen on hard times, but a young couple I knew had dreams of fixing her up. Do you know if she still exists? I have long since lost track of her and all the people involved.

Great video, excellent discussion of the details. We were especially interested in the rudder, seat back, oars and boat hook and plan to incorporate a few of those features into our Penobscot 14.
Thanks for sharing!

MISSED ONE? I didn’t see Mirror Dinghy in your list. Did I miss it? Although from UK, it seemed to be popular in mid west when I was growing up there. I just googled it and it said there were 70,000 made.
For your information. I enjoyed seeing your segments on dinghies and HMM. Hope this is correct place for my comment.
Neil Thinn says:
Steve and Maynard,
Thank you for the very interesting video review of Herreshoff and other clinker dinghies.
Yours sincerely

Evelyn Ansel says:
It’s inspiring to see so much interest in HMCo small craft in particular, which tend to be much less well-documented than the larger boats. For folks who are interested in replicas: it is worth noting that IYRS second year students measured GEM and built a replica in 2014, so we know there’s at least one “floating around” out there. Moreover, GEM herself is on permanent display at the Herreshoff Museum in Bristol if OCH community members ever have the opportunity to come by in person. We are thrilled that you are spreading the word to those who aren’t within striking distance though – thanks for your great work, Eric, Maynard, Steve et. al.!
Henrique van Deursen says:
Real a gem.. first of all it is not plastic!
G Gordon Gray says:
Way too many plastic boats available. To make a dinghy in wood, be easy to row or sail, would be ideal.
Philip Myer says:
The cover photo of Katie Herreshoff rowing ‘Gem’ is a gem ! Maynard and Eric should take up residence at the Herreshoff Museum , they are so knowledgable on these wonderful historic boats.
Evelyn Ansel says:
On behalf of HMM, we wholeheartedly agree! How about it Maynard, Eric, we have plenty of empty bunks in the Hall of Boats ;)
Philip Myer says:
I live in Tasmania but I have been to the wonderful HMM but I nearly got booted out when I said that my cousin was in the crew of Australia II ,that won the Americas’s Cup in 1983.
Evelyn Ansel says:
Hi Philip, the statute of limitations has run out on that one, you’re definitely welcome any time in our book ;)
Walter Connolly says:
Can you purchase plans for Frost Bite if so where? It is a true classic.
Earland Briggs says:
I am a retired dentist, age 89, and have just completed the “off center skiff”in about 2 months of off and on time in between tennis, golf and croquet. It was a thrill to solve some of the tricky demands. I am looking with great anticipation to see if there are any leaks. My friends are very impressed with the beauty of this 14 ft skiff and that I was able to do it. I would recommend this project to anyone with time and interest. Many films are available to help the process. Earl
William McCaffrey says:
Maynard, I would love to build the tender if someone ever takes the lines. Its beautiful and would make a fun day on the water.
