I have finished the planking and am moving on to the frames. Just a few “oh-no’s” so far.

I have anxiously been awaiting the concluding episodes with the kids and Eric as they move toward the launching. Details I would enjoy watching: caulking the topsides & bottom, constructing the inwale and location/installation of oarlocks, thwarts, as well as the interior support block on the the transom, final installation of oak skids on the bottom, attaching some form of rubrail (or padding) around the gunwales, and final sanding, prep and painting of both interior and exterior. Instead, we have somehow “skipped” through those stages, and though the “baby” has now been delivered( and is obviously a lovely newborn), many of us who have been eagerly watching from afar have a sense of loss that we missed “the rest of the story.” I only wish I could have been one of those lucky kids who had the good fortune to be part of this exciting (and creative) learning experience!
Steve Stone says:
Thanks for the nudge, Steve. Another episode will be out soon. We like to keep a variety of topics rolling out for those who are not interested in building a skiff, as hard as it may be to imagine there is anyone in that camp.
Sean Scully says:
Kids building one step at a time add’s up to a completed project like in life.
Golden job OCH.
Gene Gilbert says:
So great to see these young people learning a craft that uses the hands, eyes, and cognitive skills……They not only take part in building, but learn people skills as well…..That a boy to OCH
Burton Blais says:
I just love watching the kids do all the little jobs like driving screws, cutting, etc.. I wish I had acquired traditional boat building skills when my kids were little instead of going the plywood-epoxy route. I was always worried about exposing my kids to noxious epoxy and fiberglass dust, even with protective equipment, and so never involved them in building those type of boats. In retrospect, building a nice little boat like a Yankee Skiff would have been a great project, just like this one. Oh, well, there is always grand kids (hopefully some day) – gives me a bit of time to develop my own woodwright skills…
