I would also love to see a sketch or reference for the sculling oar. MURRELET is a beautiful creation. It was touching to hear someone else express builder’s remorse for when a long project is completed an vacates the shop

Such a beautiful boat and such an enjoyable video. I especially enjoyed Bertram’s commentary on the boat and his life. Nice to see yet another late-70’s sailor following his passion and staying active. Thanks.

    Lovely man.
    Lovely boat.
    And a wonderful interview,
Steve is becoming the Terry Gross of the wooden boat world, always bringing out the best from his subjects.

    • Robert Kunzig says:

Yes indeed Bruce – thank you Bertram, thank you Steve!
So wonderful is the life you show us, it is an inspiration.
Because of OCH and others I too am getting out on the water, overnighting and feeling deeply the depth of it all. What a gift you give every quiet early morning I choose to click into…

  • David Newell says:

lovely boat – enjoy the fruits of you labour. Dave

  • alex lemon says:

is this an Aage design? the video doesnt say.

    • Bertram Levy says:

The lines are taken from a Maynard Bray article, drawn by Peter Christen, and modified to 19 feet from the original Fern 18.3. There are no plans as Mr. Nielsen didn’t want his plans sold. There was one construction drawing in the book of Nielsen called Worthy of the Sea. I made it up as I went.

  • Larry Cheek says:

    A beautiful argument for:

    (1) A bright-finished hull, and to hell with all the drearily practical attributes of paint;
    (2) NOT giving up boatbuilding, sailing, or ambition just because of age; and
    (3) Dedication to the highest level of craftsmanship possible.

Congratulations, Bertram. It’s a stunning achievement.

  • Charlie Nichols

    Charlie Nichols says:

Such a beautiful boat – had the chance to stand and dream on the Boat Haven docks last month while I was in PT – such a great video – very very nice job on the video interview – but a much better job building the boat – BRILLIANT!!!! Thanks!

  • Jerry Readinger says:

What a beautiful boat and such an interesting man Bertram is.

    Thx for the videos!

  • Stephen L. Clark says:

Another video that gives this 73 year old hope for the future. I watch for the boats, but your real success is the people. Bertram is a perfect example. Thanks, Steve
