Getting the details dialed in.  Still a few things to sort out but things are shaping up in preparation for a great season

Thanks! The non skid is gibco ‘redeck’,  then painted with awlgrip with  medium griptex, and two coats of straight paint on top. It is an INCREDIBLY grippy surface that gives great confidence when standing up.

20230623_15470620230304_15414478 50w20230706_213752he same same non skid that is applied to $10m Weaver sport fish.

20231021_130318Hey Doug! Thank you so much for the high words of praise,  it’s very nice to hear as someone still trying to find his way in the marine industry.  I don’t think I posted build pics of the spars? So here’s a few.

I decided to sleeve the lug and boom to add stiffness since the scantlings felt a bit dainty to my eye.  I know a lugger needs to be as stiff and light as possible,  and the carbon tied into my tiller build which has a modern classic aesthetic. So I left them finished bright with 15% painted tips. The carbon comes in a sleeve,  like a tube sock.  It conforms to the taper of the spar nicely and has an epoxy matrix coated with varnish for some uv protection.  The paint is brushed awlgrip.

I chose sitka spruce over Doug fir as it is considerably lighter,  and I had some already.  I left them 8 sided simply for the look as I didn’t want them to look like a pre made carbon tube. I really enjoy the bright carbon next to the varnished white oak jaw and copper rivets. A juxtaposition not often seen!

Thank you. I’ve still got a few finishing touches left, including finishing the rig,  casting the oar lock riser blocks, etc.

She’s going to be a great addition to life on the bay. Hopefully my son can grow into this boat and use it as a safe platform to learn Seamanship skills and explore the bay.

Thanks mate. It’s been a journey! Getting very close to seeing the water.  The sail arrives at the end of August and hopefully I will have the rig sorted by then.

Thanks Doug. Yes,  the interior is all “hand finished”. Everything is encapsulated in fiberglass, bulkheads are all tabbed and filleted in, and the paint is sprayed awl grip. The molded non skid texture is a product called re-deck by gibco. It’s a fiberglass sheet with the texture on it that gets cut to shape and laminated on and painted over. Then I masked the non skid off and painted it with a contrasting color and griptex sand. 20221114_07592320220520_16123020220608_17153620220729_124620

Is a bit over the top,  but I saw this as an opportunity for me to develop some new skills and experiment with materials.

Thanks mate.  It came out pretty unique and way strong.  I don’t know how long it took to make. I’d spend a half hour here and there after work when I felt like messing with it.

I was really just looking for an excuse to experiment with materials and techniques. I’ve always loved the juxtaposition of teak and carbon with a little bronze sprinkled in.
