Hi Doug! Yes, a fun and reasonably easy build. First, the rumors circulating about the fact that I couldn’t get the one piece hull out of cellar, so I had to cut it in half are completely false. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. No, I will not be taking it apart frequently, but it does make transporting in my short bed pickup truck a lot easier. All truck beds can handle 48″ width and Oonagh has 60″beam, she is not about to slide into any large or small truck bed.
July 23, 2022 at 6:17 am in reply to: From Doug Hylan — Thoughts on Paint & What Was Used on the Boat in the Video #46706Richard HonanParticipantDoug, I agree with you about gloss vs semi-gloss and satin gloss. From years of running a small sign company, a product that we used quite frequently was flattening paste. It was manufactured or sold under the brand names Chromatic or Ronan Flattening paste. Easier mixes into any oil or alkaloid or even the newer urethane paints. Anther suggestion is the use of Penetrol, a paint conditioner. Adding 15% – 20% by volume of paint will allow any oil base paint to go on smoother, allows brush strokes and orange peel roller texture to disappear. It gives you more time to work with the paint with out affecting the drying time.

I am just finishing my Oonagh. Started in late January 2022 with the help of two good friends. My Oonagh, named, “Summer Sisters” is named after my two daughters, Amy and Christine. My Oonagh is unique in that it breaks down into a two piece hull, which easily bolts together. I also added three additional, sealed water tight floatation chambers.
Richard HonanParticipantGood afternoon, Doug! We met a little over a week ago at the WoodenBoat Show in Mystic Seaport. I’m the guy with light blue and green 13’00” Peapod (with the flags). Our little talk we had on Saturday got me thinking about my agility and Oonagh’s stability. I just ordered the plans and am looking forward to build number thirteen.
Richard HonanParticipantAfter seeing Doug Hermann’s “Arriba” at this year’s WoodenBoat Show, I have ordered the building plans. Having built and sailed four 7’8″ Nutshell Prams, the “Arriba” sounds perfect for my seventy three year old body. My agility and balance, as described by Doug Hylan in the intro video hit the nail on the head. Having previously built twelve small wooden boats, ranging from Nutshell Prams, a 16’00 Melonseed, Adirondack Guide Boat and most recently a Doug Hylan 13’00” Peapod, I’m looking forward to not only building the, “Arriba”, but rowing and sailing it.
