Hi Roy
Great to see there is another Oonagh in NZ thought I was all alone. Your boat looks great it will be interesting to see how It sails with the sprit rig.My Oonagh is pretty much complete with only rigging and a few other bits and pieces to still to do. Most probably won’t launch before Labour Weekend.
Like you I built it from scratch and got a lot of enjoyment out of doing it. Am looking forward to getting it in the water and see how it goes, especially under sail.
John HaswellParticipantHi Scott – Well done the boat looks awesome. Great to see it on the water and to hear it is performing up to expectation.
Like Doug I still have a way to go before I’m ready for the water. Unfortunately I missed the end of our summer down here however am looking to a launching in October all going to plan.
Happy sailing – John
John HaswellParticipantHi Doug
Thanks for your kind comments and my apologies for not having responded earlier. Yes I will post some build photos, I’ve taken quite a lot (as you do) so will sort out a few and get them up.p
Its been an exciting build and I have enjoyed every minute of it. I started from scratch, off the plans, as the kitset option was not available here.
John HaswellParticipantThanks Steve
John HaswellParticipantHi Thomas
Great to hear from you. Your location sounds awesome and the thought that you can use Oonagh to get to your local tavern would have to be as good as it gets!
If you do get to NZ (all things COVID allowing) please do look me up. As you probably know Hamilton is only about 3-4 hour drive away.
I started Oonagh in Nov last and have nearly completed the hull with painting underway. Still away to go though as I have done nothing about spars, rudder etc.
John HaswellParticipantHi Doug
I also have my sail and like you when I spread it out on the lounge floor I was surprised by its size. Being a Kiwi I had mine made here in NZ by one of our smaller sailmakers experienced in dinghy sails. Cost NZ$950
When I ordered the sail they requested to lay the cloth (Dacron Contender Super Cruise) horizontally rather than vertically as on the sail plan. After some research I found it is commonly done this way with lug type sails in NZ so I agreed.
Will have to wait & see!
John HaswellParticipantHow do I upload photos please. Tried the link in ‘meet the builders’ but no success.
Thanks.John HaswellParticipantNo but they are in feet & inches, we work in millimeters. Fortunately I have an old (like me) wooden, 3 ft rule which allows me to take a measurement off the plans which I then convert to metric by holding the 3 ft rule against my metre rule!
